Police say a gun was found near the spot where a pizza delivery man was shot Saturday night, but they don't know if it was the weapon used to kill him.

Donald Chad Smith, 27, died of a single gunshot outside an apartment building on Joseph Young Street in north-end Dartmouth.

Halifax Regional Police said a gun was found Sunday night in the woods nearby, behind some apartments on Farthington Place.

That gun is now the focus of the investigation.

"If we're able to determine that this weapon was used in the homicide then we'd be looking for other evidence that might be left on the firearm. And certainly it may lead to a possible witness who might have seen who placed it or who came from the area where it was found," said Const. Brian Palmeter, a police spokesman.

Investigators were asking for the public's help in finding a red SUV that was spotted in the area Saturday night.

Police said the owner contacted them late Tuesday. But there was no word on what came of that discussion.

Call from pay phone

Smith, of Windsor Junction, was working his second shift at Panada Pizza when he was killed.

Police said the call to the pizza shop was made from a pay phone on Highfield Park Drive between Joseph Young Street and Burnside Drive. It came in less than an hour before Smith was shot.

Police are still looking for the caller.

Palmeter said Monday there was no evidence that Smith knew his shooter.
