Provincial highway crews are busy in Pictou County fixing washouts along highways and culverts. There's widespread damage after the heavy rain on the weekend.

A section of the West River Station Road is gone in Watervale, leaving a 20 metre gap in the road.

One grader operator told the CBC's Rob North he plowed uprooted trees from the surface of the Trans-Canada highway in the middle of the night, Sunday.

"The torrents of rain and flash flooding tossed trees around like toothpicks," said North. "The guardrail is twisted and ripped out of the ground as if it were a plastic straw."

It's not clear how long it will take – or how much it will cost – to repair all the damage.
