Four people managed to escape a fire that burned the front of a rooming house on Agricola Street in Halifax early Sunday morning.

Fire crews were called to the scene near Young Street around midnight.

When they arrived, three people had made it out on their own, but one person was still inside near the rear of the house. Firefighters made the rescue through a window using a ladder.

The Canadian Red Cross is assisting with emergency shelter.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
