A fire in the community of Birch Grove, south of Glace Bay, Cape Breton has destroyed a 99-year-old church.
About 50 firefighters from four departments respond to the fire at the Victoria Presbyterian Church about 3 a.m. Saturday.
When they arrived the roof was already fully engulfed.
Regional Deputy Fire Chief Brent Denny said only a few families regularly used the church.
"In this particular church there was only 10 families left that were attending church regularly and they were close to their hundredth anniversary and they were hoping to be able to at least hold on until they reached a 100-year mark," Denny told CBC News.
"It's devastating to the parishioners when they do lose a church and with so many memories, they basically grew up with the church. It's a tough loss on them."
Denny said the fire is not deemed suspicious and no one was inside at the time.
"The fire started … it appears to be in the attic portion of the church and it had quite a hold on the roof when the fire department arrived so it was difficult … and the fire ended up destroying the church."
