A fire has destroyed three plows and a Department of Transportation storage shed in Antigonish on Tuesday ahead of a blizzard forecast for the province.

A home next to the building also caught fire, damaging the roof and attic area.

Nova Scotia RCMP were called to the scene on Appleseed Drive, across the road from Central Home Improvement, just before 1 p.m. this afternoon.

Pam Menchenton, a spokesperson for the provincial Department of Transportation, said other parts of the province are responding to Antigonish's need for replacement snow clearing equipment ahead of Wednesday's blizzard.

"Unfortunately we lost a nine-bay plow shed and we lost three plows. We did put an emergency call out to the rest of the province," she said.

"We now currently have three trucks and one loader plow on their way to the Antigonish area and that should arrive this evening."

Members of the Antigonish Volunteer Fire Department, Antigonish County Fire Department and the Four Valleys Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire.

The dispatch centre for the Department of Transportation is being run out the regional office in the meantime.

Menchenton said it's not clear what the fire will mean for future snow clearing operations in the town.

"We will replenish those plows for the storm tonight. The longer-term implications or impact is certainly something we're going to look at and sort out what that's going to mean for us," she said.

There are no reported injuries.
