A neighbour had attempted to go into the house but the intense flames and heat made that impossible.

A house fire in Florence, N.S. on  Monday afternoon resulted in the deaths of a husband and wife, says the Cape Breton Regional Police Service.

Just before 3 p.m., police and emergency services responded to the fire at 35 MacIntyre Lane, in Florence.

A neighbour had attempted to go into the house but the intense flames and heat made that impossible.

Both the husband and wife were in their late 70s, said police.

Police said it’s still early in the investigation but at this point the fire does not seem suspicious. However, the CBRPS Forensic Identification Unit and Major Crime Unit have been called to assist the fire marshal's office with the investigation.

The names of the victims have not been released.
