Fire crews were called to an abandoned corner store in Stewiacke Monday morning after a fire broke out on Main Street.
Chris Doucette, who lives across the street from the store, said he noticed smoke coming from the building and called 911 at around 6 a.m.
"It's an abandoned convenience store, empty, it's for sale. It's been empty for a while. But right now there is a building attached to it with a functioning business in it right now. There had to be at least a dozen fire trucks. Numerous fire departments were there," he said.
Doucette said he is concerned since there have been a number of fires in the area in recent years.
“[Arson] certainly wouldn't surprise me. The laundromat and apartment building that was one building — it was, as far as I understand that was determined to be arson … And this one? Who knows,” he said.
Last year, fire officials investigated three major fires in Stewiacke.
There was also a major fire last August just down the road from the Home Hardware at BJ Electric Motor and Control Ltd.
One firefighter was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Another was under observation at the scene.
The RCMP is on the scene providing traffic control.
