A two-storey house and adjacent shed were destroyed in a fire that broke out late Sunday morning in Harrigan Cove on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore.

The owner was at home but managed to get out. She went to a neighbour's house and called the fire department. She was not injured.

By the time firefighters arrived the home was engulfed in flames. A woman who lives in the area says thick, black smoke spread across the community.

Fire crews were dousing the last remnants of the blaze Sunday afternoon and securing the scene until investigators can take a look.
