Two people have been charged with failing to provide the necessities of life and criminal negligence causing death after a 65-year-old man from Eskasoni died in June​.

RCMP said in a news release that John Johnson was suffering from a "number of medical issues" when he was taken to hospital on June 22. He died the same day at Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Police said they launched an investigation after being contacted by the medical examiner’s office.

Johnson needed daily help, police said, and he was not receiving proper care from the people responsible for him.

Marcella Marie Johnson, 53, and Peter Young, 56, are charged. They were due in Sydney provincial court Wednesday.
