An eight-metre-long minke whale carcass has washed up on a beach in Antigonish County, resting on the tide line at Piper's Path Beach in Beechill Cove near the community of Doctors Brook.

Witnesses said Tuesday afternoon that the animal had been there at least a day.

An officer from Fisheries and Oceans Canada was expected to examine the whale on Tuesday.

The federal department said it has already been in touch with the Marine Animal Response Society, a Maritime group that responds to dead, injured or stranded marine mammals.

A spokesperson for the society said the group will wait until it hears back from the fisheries officer before deciding whether to do anything with the whale. He said the most the society would do is take measurements and tissue samples.

At several tonnes, it would be difficult to move the whale.
