The search for Canada's next great hockey song is over and the winner is Nova Scotia's award-winning singer-songwriter Dave Gunning.

His song, A Game Goin' On beat out hundreds of entries from across the country, in CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada Song Quest.

The Pictou native said he heard the announcement while watching the Winter Classic hockey game on Sunday with his wife and three sons, just like everybody else watching.

Gunning will now have his song produced by Juno Award winner, Joel Plaskett.

The song will be featured in an upcoming opening sequence of Hockey Night in Canada. He'll perform it live later this month in Saskatchewan on Hockey Day in Canada.

Gunning said the song is about the nostalgia of hockey.

“You think of the Hockey Sweater, that famous piece, or the old-fashioned love of the game.” he said.

“I wish old Stompin’ Tom could have heard it, to be honest. He would be proud I think."
