Halifax Regional Police are looking for a man who broke into a Dartmouth home overnight and scuffled with the resident before taking off with stolen jewellery and a wallet.

Officers were called to the break and enter on Farrell Street around 2:40 a.m. Police say the resident woke to find a burglar in his house.

"He confronted the male and there was a brief scuffle and the suspect fled on foot," Sgt. Rob Lowther said.

"The victim called police. We checked the area, along with K9, and we were unable to come up with a suspect."

Lowther said the perpetrator got into the house through an unlocked door. The officer said this a good reminder for people to lock their doors.
