A 25-year-old man has already been formally charged with the brutal beating.

Kyle William Nichol of Sydney Mines was arrested Thursday. He has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and wearing a disguise to commit an offence.

The 16-year-old girl faces charges of aggravated assault, wearing a disguise and two breaches.

The victim is known in North Sydney as Shawn Jack and friends said he kept to himself.

He is also known to sometimes camp in the woods behind the Atlantic Superstore on King Street in North Sydney with his dog Chico. Police said the assault took place at the campsite.

He was discovered Monday night in the grocery store parking lot with severe head injuries. He is now being treated in Halifax and was last listed in serious condition.

Sydney Crown attorney Dan MacRury says he is not willing to speculate about a motive for the attack and he is not in favour of releasing Nichol on bail.

"I can say it's very clear, based on the charges that have been laid, that is a very serious incident," he said. "I can tell you, having done this for a long time, on a personal level, the facts are very disturbing."

Also charged in the attack is 22-year-old Jennifer MacLeod of Boularderie.

She's accused of aggravated assault and wearing a disguise to commit an offence. MacLeod appeared in Sydney provincial court Thursday afternoon.

Nichol will be back in court July 31 for election and plea.
