A wood pellet plant in Cookville, Lunenburg County, was destroyed after a fire broke out late Thursday afternoon.

Nine fire departments battled the blaze which was brought under control within a few hours.

Nearby a cluster of chicken barns escaped being engulfed by the flames. Thousands of birds were scheduled for delivery but the structures were empty at the time the fire began, at about 4:30 p.m.

The one-storey, wood-framed industrial building that produces wood pellets located at 900 Highway 10, was levelled.

There had been a concern about the fire spreading to the chicken barns, said Deputy Fire Chief Andrew Wentzell of Bridgewater Fire Department.

"It's in close proximity to three or four other large chicken barns."

Wentzell says there were no injuries as a result of the fire.
