A 46-year-old Halifax man who works with children as a music therapist has been charged with a slew of child pornography offences, including making available, accessing and possessing child pornography.

Robert William Harris appeared in Halifax provincial court on Thursday afternoon and was remanded into custody. He is expected back in court Friday for a bail hearing.

The Crown is opposing his release.

Harris works in the city as a music therapy teacher for children, some of whom have autism. He runs his company out of his Allan Street home called Creative Expressions Music Therapy Services.

According to the company's website, Harris graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario with a bachelor of music therapy in 2003 and a master of music therapy in 2007.

The website says Harris has worked with "infants, toddlers, school age children, teens, young adults, adults and seniors." He has provided his services to people with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, brain injuries, developmental delays, mental illness and Alzheimer's disease.

Halifax Regional Police Const. Pierre Bourdages said investigators do not believe any local children are connected to the charges.

Officers searched Harris's Allan Street house on Thursday. They arrested him and seized a computer.
