Melinda Daye defeated Irvine Carvery as the Halifax Regional School Board's African Nova Scotian member, meaning the board will have a new chair when it next meets.

Daye got 1,166 votes to edge past Carvery, who received 1,108 votes. On his Facebook page, Carvery thanked his supporters and said he was taking a "pause" from politics. Carvery has previously said he will run provincially for the Progressive Conservatives.

Daye was previously president of the Black Educators Association.

Only two of the eight positions returned an incumbent to the Halifax board — Gin Yee in District 3 and Sheryl Blumenthal-Harrison in District 6.
