Professors, librarians and laboratory assistants at Cape Breton University will take a strike vote Wednesday and Thursday.
Talks between the 160 faculty members and the university broke off earlier this month.
Scott Stewart, president of the faculty association, said the main sticking point in negotiations is the teaching workload for faculty.
The faculty's last contract ended in June.
Both sides have filed for conciliation.
Stewart remains hopeful a settlement can be reached without a strike or lockout.
The last faculty strike was in 2000, it lasted for five weeks.
