RCMP have identified a man who fell off a cliff to his death in northern Cape Breton on Friday as Susumu Yoda, 64, of Bedford, N.S.

RCMP and local firefighters responded to a 911 call at 4:00 p.m. AT on Friday of an adult male lying at the base of a cliff.

RCMP Const. Brad Anderson said Yoda appeared to have fallen about 150 metres.

"There was one firefighter who apparently rappelled the cliff in order to get to the deceased," Anderson said.

"There would be no way of knowing whether or not he had died as the result of the fall. Other local firefighters and one of the RCMP obtained the use of a boat locally and travelled to the foot of the cliff and recovered the body that way."

Anderson said an autopsy is being performed in Halifax.

Anderson also said police do not suspect foul play, and that Yoda was camping "perhaps as close as two metres from the edge."
