An inmate at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility was sent to hospital with face injuries after an altercation with another offender, says to the provincial government, marking one of three fights at the Burnside jail this week.

The Justice Department said two inmates got into a fight on Tuesday. The department posted the news to their website on Friday.

Officials said one inmate declined treatment, but the second was sent to hospital on Thursday.

The department said he needed surgery for his facial injuries. He’s expected to stay in hospital for several days.

On Sunday a female guard was allegedly attacked and knocked unconscious. Police said she was taken to hospital and had surgery.

A 21-year-old man is facing a slew of charges including uttering threats, resisting arrest, three charges of assaulting a peace officer and one charge of assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm.

He's due in court Feb. 25 to answer to those charges.

That incident was not revealed until Justice Minister Lena Diab was questioned after a cabinet meeting on Thursday.

Halifax police said they received a call on Friday morning about a third fight that reportedly happened at the jail on Thursday night.

It's still under investigation.
