The CBRM Water Utility has issued a boil water advisory for the Sydney water system.

That includes all customers in Sydney, Sydney River, Coxheath, Westmount, Grand Lake Road, Prime Brook, Mira Road, South Bar and Membertou.

Water customers are advised to boil all water for at least two minutes before drinking or consuming it in anyway.

The order applies to water used for:

  • drinking
  • preparing infant formula
  • juice
  • ice cubes
  • washing fruits and vegetables
  • brushing teeth

Water Operations Manager Greg Penney said that the advisory is being issued as a precautionary measure resulting from one water sample which indicated quality concerns.

"The regulations are very clear with respect to how we would lift the advisory," he said.

The advisory will remain in effect until the utility gets two clear samples at the same location over a two-day period.

The utility is monitoring the situation and testing the water throughout the distribution system. It will issue a notice when the order is lifted.
