Body found after Dal student goes missing
Woman ran into trouble on canoe trip
Ontario police have found a woman`s body in the area where a Dalhousie University student went missing.
Sophie Smith, 18, finished her first year at the Halifax university and returned to Ontario. She was on a canoe trip Friday on Kawagama Lake near Algonquin Provincial Park when she ran into trouble and disappeared.
Sgt. Peter Leon, spokesman for the Ontario Provincial Police, said a search started at 1 p.m. Friday. Officers, search dogs and helicopters scoured the area Friday and Saturday.
"There was a pretty extensive search," he said Sunday. "Regrettably, there was a discovery Saturday just after 11 a.m. of a female’s remains."
Police are waiting for the medical examiner’s report to positively identify the remains.
In 2012, Smith had started a summer business called Sophie’s Smoothies in Dorset, Ontario.
