Antigonish man charged with murder of wife

RCMP in Antigonish have charged a man with first-degree murder of his wife.

Patrick Chareka, 47, is due in Antigonish provincial court on Thursday.

He is accused of killing his wife, Ottilia Chareka,  early Wednesday at their home.

RCMP responded to a 911 call about a disturbance at 27 Centennial St. They found Ottilia with life-threatening injuries.

She died two hours later at St. Martha's Regional Hospital.

Patrick Chareka was arrested at the scene.

Ottilia Chareka was an assistant professor of education at St. Francis Xavier University. She specialized in multicultural education, human rights and citizenship education.

Patrick Chareka taught statistics at St. FX, but he's no longer listed on the university's website.

An autopsy is expected as the investigation by the RCMP North East Nova Major Crime Unit continues.
