A 32-year-old man accused of beating two people with a bat Tuesday in Glace Bay will stay behind bars until at least Friday.

The suspect is accused of assault in a dispute allegedly involving a stolen cell phone. His bail hearing may begin as early as Friday.

A man and a woman — both 19 years of age — were injured in the dispute. Both were taken to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. The woman remains in hospital, but is expected to survive.

The other victim was later airlifted to Halifax for treatment of head injuries.

Officers went to an apartment building on York Street in Glace Bay at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday after getting several calls about people being assaulted by a man with a bat.

Officers found the suspect nearby and arrested him. He lives in the building and knows the victims, said police.

The baseball bat used in the alleged attack was located on McLean Street.
