Students and staff remembered Sydney Taylor at Acadia University's convocation ceremony Sunday afternoon.

The 21-year-old died earlier this week, after she fell off a balcony in Cancun, Mexico, suffering a traumatic head injury. Police in Mexico said alcohol was a factor.

Taylor was there with about 120 other students on a graduation trip.

Sunday's ceremony in Wolfville began with a moment of silence for Taylor.

Acadia University President Ray Ivany then took the stage to share a few emotional words about her.

"We do need to celebrate today - that’s exactly what she would want and that's exactly what we will do through this ceremony. Of course we will remember her and of course we will miss her but her spirit would tell us that we need to celebrate today the accomplishments of each and every graduate," he said.

Taylor's father was in Wolfville to accept her diploma.

She graduated posthumously with honours in political science.
