A Nova Scotia man has been charged with abduction, forcible confinement, aggravated sexual assault and uttering death threats in relation to an incident Monday night, police say.
Steven Elliot Laffin, 35, appeared in Halifax provincial court Wednesday.
Police say a 29-year-old woman was sexually assaulted, then tied up and stuffed into the trunk of a car.
Police say she got free and ran to the door of a home on Old Sambro Road in Halifax on Monday night, saying she had been held against her will. The residents helped her call Halifax regional police.
While the woman was giving police a description of her assailant and the vehicle, a man matching that description showed up at the police office on Herring Cove Road. He was arrested without incident.
The woman cannot be identified because of a court order. She has convictions for prostitution-related offences.
This is not the first time Laffin has faced such charges. Court records show that two months ago a charge of sexual assault with a knife was dropped against him, when the alleged victim, another sex trade worker, did not show up in court.
The victim of Monday's incident is being treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
