A third ferry is being brought in by Marine Atlantic to help clear the backlog of commercial traffic between Port aux Basques, N.L., and North Sydney.

The Leif Ericson is being brought in after two storms over the weekend played havoc with the ferry schedule. It will be at least Wednesday before the vessel will be ready to sail.

Seven crossings from each port have been impacted by the storms, according to Darrell Mercer, spokesperson of Marine Atlantic.

“We have seen wind gusts in excess of 170 kilometres per hour, and of course they are not ideal sailing conditions,” he said.

“So as a result, we do have a significant backlog of commercial traffic in North Sydney.”

Earlier on Tuesday, there were 250 commercial trucks and containers waiting in North Sydney. About 100 of them are now en route to Port aux Basques.
