1878 Halifax atlas now available online
City map shows businesses, naval bases and homes
The Nova Scotia Archives put a 136-year-old map of Halifax online to help researchers learn about the city.
The book, Hopkins’ City Atlas of Halifax, was published in 1878. The digital version lets you zoom in, look around and learn how the city looked back then.
A waterfront hotel near the Cogswell Interchange was the site of a naval ordnance dump, for example.
“If you are doing research on a business that was here, you can find it on the map. If your family lived here 100 years ago, you can find the house,” said Gary Shutlak, the senior reference archivist.
The CBC’s Rob Gordon stopped by to flip to through the original atlas.
