Yukon sex assault draws 32-month sentence
44-year-old Teslin man assaulted 16-year-old niece
A Teslin, Yukon, man has been sentenced to 32 months in jail for sexually assaulting his niece.
The 44-year-old man, who cannot be named in order to protect the victim’s identity, pleaded guilty last week in territorial court.
He has also been banned from the community of about 450.
Evidence showed he drove his 16-year-old niece by snowmobile to a remote cabin and forced sex on her. Evidence also showed he had planned the assault for months.
Court was told the assault has strained family relationships in Teslin.
It's not the first time the man has assaulted young girls. His criminal record shows assaults on at least three underage girls in the 1990s.
A community justice worker told court the man shamed and betrayed his Tlingit clan, and he's no longer welcome in Teslin.
The man will avoid penitentiary time. He has already been in jail for more than eight months awaiting trial. The judge ruled he can serve the remaining 23 months at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre.
