The Kluane First Nation has signed a deal with a mining company exploring for platinum.

Kluane Chief Mathieya Alatini said the agreement with Prophecy Platinum will give the First Nation an ownership stake in the company.

Mathieya added it will ensure the First Nation’s interests in environmental protection are respected.

"Prophecy really put into place kind of a respectful, neighbourly relationship. More of a collaborative approach towards environmental monitoring – anything that would be of concern to the First Nation as stewards of the land," said Mathieya.

Prophecy Platinum Chairman John Lee said the deal gives the foundation for a new agreement which will have to be negotiated if the company decides to go ahead and construct a mine in the area.
