Yellowknife’s Salvation Army says it is not getting enough donations to fill their Christmas hampers this year.

The centre says there are also more families in need of a basket this year.

Usually, the centre feeds more than 500 families at Christmas time.

"When we provide Christmas hampers, it’s a complete Christmas meal, and some food that lasts over I'd say at least a week. And gifts for the Children. So with a lot of low-income families and single families in Yellowknife, this is the only Christmas they get, from the Salvation army," said Stacey Vanmetre, who works at the Salvation Army.

Vanmetre said they will continue to take applications to receive a Christmas hamper until Dec. 16.
