Yvonne Desjarlais, 63, of Lutselk’e, N.W.T., was found the morning of Sunday Dec. 30 on the ground near Franklin Avenue and 53rd Street. She was taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Her body was sent to Edmonton for an autopsy, which determined the cause of death was a homicide.

Desjarlais lived in Lutselk’e with her husband Joe, but also spent a lot of time in Yellowknife staying at the women's shelter. Friends said she was known in both communities for her kind demeanor.

Family and friends held a memorial for Desjarlais last month in Yellowknife.
