Writ drops for Rankin Inlet South by-election
Elections Nunavut has dropped the writ for the Feb. 10 by-election in Rankin Inlet South.
Candidates have until 2pm Friday, Jan. 10 to declare their candidacy.
The by-election is being held after a judicial recount confirmed a tie between Lorne Kusugak and Alexander Sammurtok.
Sammurtok and Kusugak may run again, but the by-election is also open to other candidates. Candidates do not have to live in Rankin Inlet South.
Before this fall's election, the constituency included Whale Cove. Now it takes in the western part of Rankin Inlet.
October's election also produced a tie in Uqqummiut, the constituency that takes in Clyde River and Qikiqtarjuaq.
A judicial recount in November found that Qikiqtarjuaq's Samuel Nuqingaq beat Clyde River's Niore Iqalukjuak by just two votes.
