RCMP have confirmed that a woman was taken to hospital in Yellowknife with serious injuries after she was hit by a vehicle in Hay River yesterday.

It happened at the intersection of Highway #2 (Mackenzie Highway) and Royal Road at around 7:30 in the morning, RCMP said in a news release.

The intersection is the only one along that strip of highway with a marked crosswalk, including signs and flashing lights.

An initial investigation found that drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the collision. The investigation is ongoing.

RCMP are reminding pedestrians to wear reflective clothing when walking nears roads at night. They’re also reminding drivers to be aware of winter driving conditions.
