A 53-year-old woman was found dead in Fort Smith, N.W.T.

Police said someone in the community found the woman at about 2 p.m. on Wren Crescent.

The Office of the Chief Coroner of the Northwest Territories is investigating the cause of death, along with the RCMP. Police say the woman died suddenly.

"Every year, unfortunately, we do see deaths where cold exposure is the cause of death and it is very sad, and it's one thing the coroner's service encourages people to make sure they are dressed for the elements," said Cathy Menard, the territory's chief coroner.

Menard said the woman's body is being sent out for an autopsy to determine what caused her death.

The RCMP have not released the woman’s name.
