A woman is dead following a house fire in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Wednesday night.

The fire broke out in a single family home at about 10:30 p.m. local time.

"There was a fire at one of the houses in the town that was quickly put out by the occupants," said Keith Morrison, the volunteer fire chief. "Unfortunately there was one fatality."

There were four people in the house at the time.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released.

Morrison said the other three occupants were treated for smoke inhalation.

One was medevaced out of the hamlet for further medical treatment.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and an investigation is underway.
