The Mae Bachur animal shelter in Whitehhorse is once again taking in animals from the public.

However it can only house up to 20 animals at a time due to limited staff and finances, so there are new rules for people who want to give up their animals to the humane society.

"If it's their animal and they need to surrender it, we do ask if they are fixed and vaccinated and then ask for proof," said manager Amanda Farrell.

"If the situation arises and we need to take them regardless, we still take them if we can — if we have the staff."

Currently there are 14 animals at the shelter: five cats, five dogs and four puppies.

The new board elected in December is looking at the shelter’s finances and working on fundraising ideas and goals.

The shelter is about $50,000 in debt.
