Two men, aged 48 and 49, drown outside of Arviat

There are few details available on what happened to two men who drowned about 50 kilometres outside of Arviat over the weekend.

Two Arviat residents drowned while fishing on the weekend.

Local RCMP responded to the scene on Saturday evening, where they found the bodies and a boat.

"The boat had been damaged," said the RCMP's Yvonne Niego, "and found in an area of low tide and shallow areas. The two deceased were recovered."

The incident happened about 50 kilometres north of the hamlet in an area known as Sandy Point.

The 48-year-old and 49-year-old men were last seen on Saturday evening around 5 p.m. local time setting fishing nets.

The RCMP is now working with the Office of the Coroner. Autopsies have not been ordered.
