The community of Tulita, N.W.T., is on emergency high alert because of a nearby forest fire.

Fourteen elders were flown to Deline today because of respiratory problems due to smoke.

Mayor Danny Yakeleya said the smoke was so thick, it was difficult to see across town.

A huge forest fire burning about 20 kilometres away is being closely monitored. Yakeleya said the wind is expected to change direction away from the community Wednesday.
