Tuktoyaktuk man, 23, dead in snowmobile skipping accident
Joe Kimiksana died Friday after his snowmobile sank in the harbour
A Tuktoyaktuk, N.W.T., man is dead after the snowmobile he was driving sank in the Tuk Harbour on Friday.
Joe Kimiksana, 23, had been seen ”skipping,” or intentionally travelling over water on a snowmobile.
“The subject was unable to get over the edge of the solid ice sheet which resulted in the sinking of his snowmobile and himself shortly after,” RCMP said in a news release.
RCMP, the fire department search and rescue and local volunteers assisted in recovering Kimiksana's body.
It had been submerged for just 20 minutes.
He was taken to the local health centre where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Police say they believe alcohol was a factor.
Skipping is a popular spring activity in the North, especially now that more and more people post and exchange YouTube videos of themselves covering long distances over open lakes or streams.
RCMP are reminding people that the activity is dangerous.
