Thursday's hot spot in Canada: Haines Junction, Yukon
The "pineapple express" that has been sweeping through the Yukon has pulled into Haines Junction with a blast of warm weather.
The mercury there hit +13.6 C on Thursday, warmer than Orlando, Florida, and the hot spot in Canada.
Haines Junction, population 855, is 160 kilometres west of Whitehorse, and sits on the edge of Kluane National Park.
Mike Crawshay is the town’s mayor.
“We had a council meeting last night and I was walking there with another councillor and it was like we were wearing sorta late summer, early fall jackets, and shoes instead of boots,” Crawshay says. “It was a nice walk!"
The entire Yukon is experiencing extremely mild temperatures.
Whitehorse hit a record with 6.5 C Thursday, surpassing the previous record of 5.6 C set in 1968.
The forecast called for a high of 10 C.
Both Faro and Ross River were also expected to reach 6 C.
That will mean those communities are also warmer than Orlando, which is sitting at a mere 4 C.
