Taku River Tlingit oppose new Yukon campground
The Taku River Tlingit First Nation in Atlin, B.C., says the Yukon government is breaking the law by building a campground at Atlin Lake.
Spokesperson John Ward says the site is part of a land claim the First Nation has filed with the federal government and Yukon's position that it can develop what it wants on the Atlin Road is wrong.
"The Yukon government feels that their own policies and decisions supersede the Canadian constitution, so this government needs to shape up and start believing in the Canadian constitution if they want to continue being part of Canada," he said.
Ward says the First Nation has sent a letter to the federal minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development laying out its concerns. It's also looking at legal action.
