Suitcase full of money results in jail term
An Ontario man has been sentenced to jail in Nunavut after being caught three years ago with a suitcase full of money.
Carleton Place resident Peter Schurm was in court in Iqaluit on Friday.
In February, 2010, he was preparing to fly to Ottawa after a two-day visit to Iqaluit. But cargo scanners at the Iqaluit International Airport alerted police about his suitcase
The RCMP found just over $115,000 in cash in the suitcase. A police officer said the money was bundled in the same manner as cash seized from other drug transactions.
Justice Sue Cooper sentenced him to six months at the Baffin Correctional Centre and 12-months probation.
The court was told that since Schurm was charged, he has received treatment for his addiction to pain killers. He has been in a methadone treatment program for the last two years. His lawyer said he hopes his client will be transferred to a jail in the south where he can continue his treatment.
