Man travelling to Rankin Inlet by snowmobile ran out of gas

A Nunavut traveller made it home safely on Christmas Day after becoming stranded in the Kivalliq region.

The man was travelling by snowmobile from Whale Cove to Rankin Inlet when he ran out of gas.

RCMP Sgt. Yvonne Niego says Whale Cove RCMP were notified on Christmas Eve by an activated SPOT device.

"Due to the blizzard conditions a search wasn't able to get underway until the next morning," she said.

A ground team carried out a search and rescue on Christmas Day and located the man about 30 kilometres south of Rankin Inlet.

His name has not been released.

RCMP are reminding hunters and travellers heading out on the land to be well equipped with gas, food and a SPOT device.
