An Iqaluit man involved in a beating that left a man with brain damage will find out his fate next month.

Geteonie Kopalie, 25, appeared in the Nunavut Court of Justice Tuesday in Iqaluit for sentencing submissions.

Kopalie has pleaded guilty to the offence which occurred in Apex in July 2011.

Kopalie was drinking with several people at a house in Apex when he was asked to leave by Edward Norman, who lived at the residence.

Kopalie went back to Iqaluit by taxi and then returned to Norman's house with his brother.

There was a fight. Norman ended up on the ground and witnesses say Kopalie kicked and stomped on Norman's head. Norman suffered a brain hemorrhage and spent weeks in hospital. He has undergone 16 months of physical therapy in the south.

In court the Crown prosecutor referred to a victim impact statement from Norman's mother, who now cares for him at her home in Newfoundland-Labrador. She said she has to remind her son to shower and shave and since the incident he's now like a child.

The Crown asked for a sentence of four years in prison. The defence is asking for 18 months to two years. Kopalie was visibly upset in court. He said he was extremely sorry for what he had done and said he is now paying for his mistakes.

Kopalie will remain in custody until he appears in court for his sentencing on April 10.
