Officials are investigating the cause of a Hay River, N.W.T., fire that destroyed a home Monday morning.
Fire Chief Ross Potter said the fire department got the call at 9:15 a.m., and by the time they arrived the house on Vale Island was already completely engulfed in flames.
"With the house being totally involved during our arrival there wasn't much we could do,” said Potter.
“The house was insulated with wood shavings and sawdust. It was a 1950s house. So that made fire ground operations that much more difficult."
Potter said the homeowner had already left for the day when the fire started.
He said the blaze burned all morning and the last fire truck left the scene at 2:30 p.m.
The building was completely destroyed and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
