A Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, man was sentenced to three years for manslaughter Thursday for a hit and run that left another man dead.

In July 2011, Idlout Korgak was driving an ATV under the influence of alcohol when he hit Paul Katalak. Katalak died of his injuries.

Korgak, 34, was originally charged with second-degree murder, but later pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

In a court session held at the Siniktarvik Hotel in Rankin Inlet, Korgak started crying as he got up to apologize for his actions.

"This will not bring Paul back, but I hope the family can forgive me,” he said. “I am very sorry."

Justice Rene Foisey sentenced him to three years for manslaughter, six months for leaving the scene of an accident and six months for operating a ATV while prohibited.

Foisey said Korgak was raised in a house where alcohol was abused and he adopted the lifestyle he was taught.

The judge gave him credit for the 19 months he has already spent in remand at the Baffin Correctional Centre and recommended Korgak serve his time in the new healing facility in Rankin Inlet due to the "gross overcrowding" at the Baffin Correctional Centre.
