Hundreds of people packed the Igloo Church in Inuvik, N.W.T., Monday for a memorial to the late Bob Heath.

They remembered Heath, who died in a plane crash in Antarctica last month, as a hard-working man who loved helping out.

Search crews were unable to recover Heath's body, and those of the other two pilots, but he recovery effort is expected to resume during the next research season.

Instead of a coffin, Heath's trademark leather bomber jacket hung at the front of the church, surrounded by photos of him.

Bishop of the Arctic David Parsons led the service. He gave examples of Heath's kindness and willingness to be there for others.

During the service, people shared stories about the Arctic pilot's work with the church – he would often cook for jamborees and church breakfasts.

Inuvialuit Regional Corporation President Nellie Cournoyea said Heath would always fly to any location to pick up passengers, and almost every Inuvialuit has flown with him.

Heath's son-in-law, Joe Prest, thanked the community for their support.

He said the turnout at the memorial was a true testament to the kind of man Bob Heath was.

A community feast was also held in his honour last night.
