The official opening ceremony of the new $40 million jail in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, took place Friday.
“Having this facility operational is the first step towards our goal of housing all Nunavut offenders within the territory,” Justice minister Daniel Shewchuk in a press release.
So far 13 inmates have been transferred to the facility since Jan. 9.
One of them is Jarvis Kingilik from Baker Lake, who was at the Baffin Correctional Centre in Iqaluit.
Kingilik said he feels closer to his family.
“It feels a lot better, easier to go on the phone and talk to them pretty much often.”
There is room for 48 inmates with 45 staff positions.
