Seven people were sent to hospital in Watson Lake, Yukon, after a van they were travelling in was involved in a vehicle accident on the Alaska Highway.

The driver and six others were headed for the Cantung Mine earlier Wednesday.

According to Val Pike, a hospital spokesperson, four of the patients were treated and released from Watson Lake Hospital. Two are being held, in stable condition, at the hospital for further observation and one has been medevaced to Vancouver for further treatment. He's also in stable condition.

John Knapp, the manager of the mine, said no one was suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Watson Lake RCMP say the van rear-ended a transport truck at about 11 a.m. Wednesday at marker 1004, just west of Nugget City.

Const. Billy Gossen said the accident happened because of poor visibility.

"The transport truck was slowing down to turn into a truck stop to try to get all the snow and debris off their rear tail lights and of course due to all the snow being put into the air by the transport truck, the van did not see the semi and rear-ended the semi."

The driver of the transport truck was not injured.

Gossen said snow plows are working as hard as they can to clear the highway and the road is covered in snow and ice. He is advising people to stay off the highway if they can, slow down and keep their distance from transport trucks.
