No one was hurt in a Nunavik community when a New Year’s fireworks display went awry.
The brilliant display turned into a ground show when a spark ignited the stockpile of fireworks. They blasted on the ground instead of firing into the air.
The event was captured on video by a spectator. Onlookers are heard expressing delight in the overhead display, then puzzlement and concern as the ground explosions begin.
Willia Nappaluk, the municipal manager for Akulivik, Que., said the fireworks were anchored into the snow and not in wooden boxes.
“Everybody was safe,” he said. “Me, I ran away when the blast started right behind me so I had a headache for about half an hour.”
The fireworks display has been a tradition in recent years in Akulivik but Nappaluk is the only one with a licence to handle them.
He said the community is hoping to see more people licensed next year, so he has help.
